I have confirmed HSV1 (Oral herpes)

We expect most of you accessing this site will be only too familiar with the way their cold sores develop.
Most of the time there will be a feeling of tingling or heat which precedes the development of the actual sore. This is called the prodrome. Once the sore develops (usually on the lip, but sometimes in the gums or even the tongue or nose) it will be present for a number of days before healing. Typically small blisters form which give way to a painful crusted scab. Remember that during this period you may be infectious to others so do your best to avoid any direct contact.

It’s common to find that HSV1 reactivates during periods of illness, fatigue and stress – nobody knows quite why this should be. We would love to advise you to avoid all stress and fatigue but this may be tricky in the modern world!

Treatment: Your doctor may have recommended creams to put on the cold sore when you feel the symptoms coming on, or in more severe cases may give you the same medication to take by mouth.

Antiviral drugs

The most common medicines used are antiviral medicines called nucleoside analogies – the most common prescribed and used are Acyclovir, Valacyclovir, and Penciclivir. These drugs have been shown to shorten the duration of the cold sore attack but do not cure the disease. While effective, these drugs can be associated with side effects including burning, stinging or flaking of the skin (using cream or ointment), or nausea, vomiting, fatigue or loss of appetite (using tablets.) More serious side effects can happen but are very rare.

In most countries, creams or ointments can be obtained over the counter but the tablet form of the medication must be prescribed by a physician. Patients will often keep a supply of their medication at home to self-dose when an attack is coming on.

Z

Barrier creams

Barrier creams or ointments, or local anaesthetics, may be obtained over the counter or by prescription. They may make the cold sore feel less painful but have not been shown to shorten the length of attacks.
Z

Steroids

While steroids have been used to reduce the inflammation of HSV1, there is less evidence for their use than the antiviral drugs. Also many authorities worry about the potential for reducing the immune response and do not recommend these drugs.

RELEEV is a natural herbal treatment which has until now only been available in North America. It has been shown in both laboratory experiments and clinical trials to be active against the herpes virus, and to reduce the pain AND the duration of cold sore attacks.

Avoiding transmission to others

You may be infectious to others if you have either the symptoms or signs of the disease. It may be possible to transfer the virus to other sites such as your own eyes or genitals, although this is uncommon.

If you have any symptoms then you be sure to do the following:

=
Avoid kissing and close personal contact – this can include contact sports such as rugby and martial arts
=
Don’t share toothbrushes, crockery or cutlery
=
Wash and dry your hands carefully after and contact with your mouth
=
Be especially careful around babies
